TAKING CARE OF MARBLE STAINS

Admired for its elegance and timeless appeal, marble radiates a quiet luxury and sophistication, making it the most widely used natural stone.  However, marble is also a delicate stone and is susceptible to stains, etching, scratches and breakage.  It therefore requires meticulous care to ensure its longevity, especially when installed as countertops, sinks and flooring in kitchens and bathrooms.

A stained marble surface retracts the aesthetic appeal of this stunning stone. To understand why marble stains easily, we need to be aware of how this stone is produced.  Marble is a metamorphic rock, formed when limestone is subjugated to extreme temperature and pressure and is primarily composed of minerals such as calcite or dolomite.  It is this composition that makes marble extremely porous. In other words, it allows water and liquids such as oil, tea, coffee, wine, and coffee to seep into the stone’s surface, leading to discoloration.  Therefore, it is crucial to clean spills immediately.  Otherwise, it may lead to permanent damage.

Organic Stains

Spilled food and beverages are the most widely known culprits for causing stains on marble and can be particularly noticeable on white and light-coloured surfaces.  Applying a solution of hydrogen peroxide mixed with a few drops of ammonia can be effectively used to remove these stains.  Allow the solution to sit on the stained surface for a few minutes before cleaning it.

Oil stains

Oil-based stains can be particularly challenging to remove. These stains tend to darken the marble, creating an uneven appearance that detracts from its natural beauty. A simple yet effective remedy involves using a poultice made of baking soda and water. This paste should be applied over the stain, covered with plastic wrap, and left to sit for at least 24 hours. The baking soda draws out the oil from the marble, lifting the stain to the surface, where it can then be wiped away.

Rust Stains

These are a major source of concern for marble countertops, flooring, or decorative features that incorporate metal.  Rust stains are typically caused by prolonged contact of marble with iron or metal-based furniture or decorative items.  Another reason for rust stains may be the presence of high content of iron in the marble. The stains appear as reddish-brown spots that are difficult to remove with standard cleaning products. It is best to contact professionals in the field of marble maintenance to eradicate these stains.

Etch Marks

Technically, though not classified as stains, etch marks appear as a discolouration or a dull spot on the marble and pose a significant concern as they dampen the aesthetic value of the space. Etching occurs when acidic substances such as citrus juice or vinegar come into contact with the stone.  Certain cleaning products even react with the minerals present in the marble, causing a chemical alteration in the stone. While mild etching can be removed with commercial marble polishing powder, deeper etches may require professional intervention.

Solution

The most effective protection against marble stains is preventive care. Harsh chemicals or abrasive scrubbers and cleaning agents can permanently damage the stone. Always use a pH-neutral cleaning solutions, as they are specifically designed for the purpose.  Even a soft microfiber cloth dampened with warm water and a mild soap solution is sufficient for daily maintenance. Drying the surface thoroughly after cleaning is equally important to prevent water spots and mineral deposits from forming.

Sealing marble surfaces with a high-quality sealant provides an additional layer of protection against spills.  It is recommended to reseal marble every 6 to 12 months, depending on usage and exposure to potential staining agents. However, while sealing does not make marble completely stain-proof, it does offer significant protection as it delays the absorption of spills and makes cleaning easier

Despite the best preventative efforts, occasional staining may still occur, and it is best to seek professional assistance. Natural stone care specialists have access to specialized equipment and cleaning solutions that can safely and effectively remove stains without compromising the integrity of the marble. Additionally, professional polishing can help restore the original shine and smoothness of the surface, eliminating minor etches and scratches in the process.
