CARING FOR MARBLE DURING MUMBAI RAINS

Marble is a timeless and elegant natural stone that adds sophistication to homes and commercial spaces. However, being a delicate and porous stone, it is susceptible to damage, especially during the rainy season.  Caring for marble surfaces requires extra vigilance and maintenance in a coastal city like Mumbai, where the monsoon brings heavy and prolonged rains.

Why does marble need special attention during the rainy season?

Marble is a natural stone, primarily composed of calcium carbonate, that reacts with acid, moisture, and pollutants. During the monsoon, continued exposure to moisture can cause several issues:

·     Stains: Rainwater, when mixed with airborne pollutants, stains marble surfaces, especially if it seeps into the stone.

·     Mold and Mildew: Dampness fosters the growth of mold and mildew, which makes a greenish black patch on marble surfaces.

·     Etching: Acidic rain or water coming from areas treated with acidic cleaning solutions etches the marble, making it appear dull.

·     Discolouration and Fading: Continuous exposure to water dulls the natural colours and patterns, affecting the aesthetics of the marble surface.

Preventive Measures

Mumbai’s proximity to the sea intensifies these issues, especially for outdoor marble surfaces like balconies, terraces and facades that face exposure to relentless rain.  To protect marble from rain, certain preventive measures should be adhered to:

Applying Sealant:  The first line of defence for all marble surfaces is an application of a high-quality stone sealant.  This acts as a barrier against water and dirt as the sealant compounds fill the microscopic pores in marble, making it resistant to moisture. It is advised that the sealants should be reapplied before the monsoon season begins to ensure the marble remains well protected.

Regular Cleaning and Drying: Marble should be regularly cleaned to prevent water stains and accumulation of dirt. Moisture should not be allowed to accumulate on marble surfaces, as it can lead to stains and eventually make the marble surface appear dull.  Marble surfaces should be wiped with a soft dry cloth to remove excess water.

Avoid Abrasive Cleaning Solutions: However, using the right cleaning solution is critical.  Acidic cleaners or harsh chemicals damage the marble’s surface and should be avoided. Instead, go for a pH-neutral cleaner designed specifically for marble and other natural stones. When cleaning marble, avoid using abrasive scrubbers or harsh cleaning pads as they can scratch and damage the marble’s finish, making it more vulnerable to stains and water damage. Instead, use soft cloths, gentle brushes, or mops with a mild, marble-safe cleaner.

Installing Awnings: Installing an awning for outdoor marble surfaces can prevent direct rain exposure. This is especially helpful for balconies, terraces, and marble-clad walls. It provides a physical barrier, keeping the surface dry and preventing the accumulation of rainwater that could seep into marble cracks or joints.

Ensuring Proper Drainage:  Waterlogging is a major issue in Mumbai during the rainy season. Stagnant water can ruin marble surfaces, leading to discolouration, algae growth and cracks. Ensure that outdoor areas with marble, such as terraces or entryways, have a proper drainage system to channel the excess rainwater away. Checking and cleaning drainage holes or pipes before and during the monsoon season can prevent water accumulation.

Promptly Addressing Damage:  Even with various safeguards in place, scratches or stains can still occur.  Sand from shoes, especially during the rains, can harm the marble’s surface if not wiped off.  Marble surfaces should be evaluated regularly for signs of degradation, especially in outdoor areas.  Minor flaws, such as stains, fractures or chipping, should be rectified as quickly as possible to avoid causing further damage.

Conclusion

Caring for marble during the rainy season requires extra attention, but it is worth it in the long run. Remember that preventive maintenance is the key to preserving marble’s beauty and durability and with the right care, marble can endure heavy rains and continue to look beautiful for years to come.
